Birthday Roundup

What a whirlwind these past few weeks have been! Here’s a recap of my wonderful birthday/week/month…

It started with a wonderful dinner at Sambuca planned by my sweet, sweet friends!

Prosecco from mom and dad, a delicious dinner, and even better company kicked off a fabulous celebration.

Oh, and I must add, I am now hooked on cupcakes from The Cupcake Collection– my parents sent them for after-dinner dessert, and good ole’ Gigi’s has nothing on them. If you haven’t been there, GO. Like go today. Do you really need a reason for a cupcake?

My birthday was topped off with a delightful picnic on Love Hill, nothing beats this gorgeous view of the city!

Nashville Skyline

I went home to Cedarburg for the weekend, where my family and I had a wonderful time! We went out to dinner Friday night, dad cooked on Saturday, and we had my whole family over for birthday/graduation/Easter lunch on Sunday. I was spoiled with TWO cakes, one for graduation and one for getting old.

Birthday!

I couldn’t have asked for a better week- I feel so loved…

Nashville Birthday Box

As you know, Grant’s birthday was last week and I made this cheesecake for dessert… I love ANYTHING birthday related and I’m a big believer that everyone needs a present to open on their birthday, so I wanted to think of something fun, creative, and not so “typical birthday.” The question was, what to do? I decided to put together a “Nashville Birthday Box” full of all sorts of things for us to do together! So, what’s in this box?

  • Bottle of Arrington wine from Arrington Vineyards, not too far out of the city. Its a perfect thing to take on a picnic there, considering the weather has been so beautiful!
  • Volunteer Traditions Tennessee t-shirt… they have great things representing all of the southern states!
  • Giftcard to the Country Music Hall of Fame for 2 tour tickets
  • Giftcard to theĀ  Yazoo Brewery for 2 tour tickets- a small, local Nashville brewery
  • Taco Mamacita giftcard, one of of my favorite Nashville restaurants
  • Frothy Monkey giftcard, a great local brunch spot within walking distance from my house
  • Of course, nothing is complete without some of mom’s chocolate from her store!

We’ve already gone to the Country Music Hall of Fame and it was fantastic! Such a cool place, a definite Nashville must.

{Sweets} Birthday Cheesecake

I’ve been wanting to attempt to make cheesecake for a while now, and Grant’s birthday was the perfect occasion! Although its my favorite dessert, I’ve always had it made for me or had it at a restaurant, so the challenge was on. I decided on a plain, New York style cheesecake to keep it simple and classic…

I used this recipe, but made a couple changes. For the crust, I used 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs, 1/4 cup melted butter, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 cup sugar. This was the perfect change- the crust was perfectly sweet and stayed together when it was cut. I also cooked it in a water bath (be sure to line the outside of the pan with aluminum foil! And, I baked it for an hour at 325F instead of 350 per the recipe.

I have to say it turned out better than I ever expected… Definitely keeping this recipe!

{Sweets} Valentine’s Day Peanut Butter Blossoms

Valentine’s day is right around the corner! In honor of this lovely holiday, I thought I’d whip up some festive cookies for the occasion, although I never really need an “occasion” to bake something. I used my favorite peanut butter blossom recipe from my grandmother, and just added a couple of “Valentine’s-y” touches.

I used pink and white sugar to roll the dough in…

PLUS

Dark chocolate dove hearts instead of kisses…

EQUALS

The perfect little (yummy) Valentine’s treat! So easy to make, and quick too, it only took me 45 minutes from making the dough to taking the last batch out of the oven!

{Sweets} Valentine’s Day Goodies

No, I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth… life has just been an absolute whirlwind! As today is February 1, I thought it was fitting to share some of the Valentines treats I’ve been baking. My kitchen has been getting LOTS of use, and I’m excited to give all of the goodies to people I love.

My mom came to visit for the weekend, so we had fun putting together packages to mail out and gift bags to deliver, as she is the best bow-tier around!!

Packaging Central!

What’s Been Cooking…

Peppermint Pretzel Sandwiches (a Pinterest find, of course!)

Cranberry-White Chocolate Chip Cookie Pops (another Pinterest recipe)

Brown Sugar Blondies (obviously with Valentine colored M&Ms)

Just HAD to sample...

Sugar Cookies (almost too cute to eat)

There were some others (lemon poppyseed muffins, peanut butter blossoms with Dove dark chocolate hearts, and monster cookies), but I didn’t snap any pictures before they were packaged and/or eaten… more likely eaten! Oops!

I love it when she comes to visit, and I hope everyone getting treats loves them as much as I enjoyed making them!

Finished Product!

Happy February!

Give Thanks

Thanksgiving this year means so much to me than in years past. I’m not sure if its because I’m an actual adult now and feel “that much” older, or if I’m gaining a new perspective and appreciation for life. Regardless, as I think about the past year and life in general, I’m feeling incredibly thankful. From my wonderful, loving, supportive family, to my sweet friends, education, and health, I am realizing I am so, so blessed in life.

After a Packers win{!!}, today is sure to be a great celebration, of all we have to give thanks for in this world. Happy Thanksgiving, Ya’ll! Now onto the cooking…
